No. 22 - Song - Edna - "What is a Maid to Do?"
Edna: | When a maid loves a man, 'Tis a sad to-do. What is to be that maiden's plan Just to indicate, if she can, That she loves him true? Half afraid she will wait, Can he be so unkind? Keeping her programme free till late, Will she be left in lonely state? Is love indeed so blind? Still her love grows stronger, Still she breathes his name; Heart palpitating, anxiously waiting, Surely he'll come his partner to claim. As the hours grow longer, She grows sadder too— Will he not listen? Hard tears glisten. What is a maid to do? When a maid loves a man, 'Tis a sad to-do. What is to be her final plan Just to prove to him, if she can, He must love her too? Not afraid, not too shy, She must be circumspect. All of his love to win she'll try; But she can only do so by Ways that are indirect. Still her love grows stronger, Still she breathes his name; Heart palpitating, anxiously waiting, Surely he'll come his partner to claim. As the hours grow longer, She grows sadder too— Will he not listen? Hard tears glisten. What is a maid to do? What is a maid to do? |
