No. 14 - Trio - Denise, Comte and Miradoux - "Any Friend of Yours"
Denise: | Here's a shocking state of affairs! My father declares He doesn't believe your explanation. |
Comte: | Here's a pretty kettle of fish! Could anyone wish For any more awkward situation? |
Miradoux: | Don't you dare to try and defend Your villainous friend Who's cruelly wronged my helpless daughter |
Comte: | Well, from what I'm able to see Monsieur Le Marquis Has managed to get in quite hot water. |
Miradoux: | You, Sir, and your precious friend
I'd like to smother, He's a rogue and scoundrel, yes, and you're another. |
Trio: | "Any friend of yours is a friend of mine," That's what people say politely, Though they know the person slightly, But it seldom works out rightly. For one can't pretend to remain a friend When an insult one endures, So I must decline as a friend of mine Any person who's a friend of yours. |
Denise: | Ah, Monsieur, I often have heard How one little word May alter a contretemps unpleasant. |
Comte: | Mad'moiselle, it's really in vain, I cannot explain, I have to keep silent for the present. |
Miradoux: | Is your friend an aristocrat, Come answer me that Or is he of humble rank and station? |
Comte: | I shall answer just when I choose, But now I refuse To give you the slightest information. |
Miradoux: | Dire misfortune all my footsteps
seems a-dogging, You, Sir, and your precious friend deserve a flogging. |
Trio: | "Any friend of yours is a friend of mine," That's what people say politely, Though they know the person slightly, But it seldom works out rightly. For one can't pretend to remain a friend When an insult one endures, So I must decline as a friend of mine Any person who's a friend of yours. Yes, when an insult one endures, One really has to draw the line, So I declare no friend of yours Shall ever be a friend of mine. |
