No. 16 - Song - Elphin and Chorus - "Careless Kate."

MIDI File

Elphin: Simple little maiden once I used to know,
Rather absent-minded as young ladies go,
Christian name was Kate,
And I beg to state
She was careless, nobody denied it.
Ever since a child she'd always been the same,
Sometimes of an ev'ning when her bedtime came,
Katie, so 'tis said,
Would put her clothes in bed,
She herself stopp'd shivering outside it!
Kate was careless, very, very careless,
She would put her clothes to bed, it's true,
But what is more,
She'd hang herself behind the door,
It was such a silly thing to do.
Chorus: Kate was careless, very, very careless,
She would put her clothes to bed, it's true,
But what is more,
She'd hang herself behind the door,
It was such a silly thing to do.

Elphin: Katie got engaged and one day had to go
With her fond fiancé in a train, you know.
Tho' the seat was wide,
They sat side by side,
Softly talking all about their marriage.
But there came a tunnel long and black as night,
And they found the lamp inside was not alight,
Kate thought "Here's a lark!
now we're in the dark,"
There were other people in the carriage!
Kate was careless, very, very careless,
Just as they had got about half way,
She screamed out, "Oh,
Your moustache does tickle so,"
It was such a silly thing to say.
Chorus: Kate was careless, very, very careless,
Just as they had got about half way,
She screamed out, "Oh,
Your moustache does tickle so,"
It was such a silly thing to say.

Elphin: A married friend of Katie's wrote and said, "Oh do
Come and see my bouncing babies, there are two!
Both as good as gold,
Only three weeks old,
Oh, whatever should I do without them?"
Screwing up her courage Katie went and called,
Nurse brought down the babies, gracious! how they squalled!
While the mother stood,
Hoping Katie would
Murmur something flattering about them.
Kate was careless, very, very careless,
And she must have filled them with dismay,
She took one peep,
Then said, "Which d'you mean to keep?"
It was such a silly thing to say.
Chorus: Kate was careless, very, very careless,
And she must have filled them with dismay,
She took one peep,
Then said, "Which d'you mean to keep?"
It was such a silly thing to say.

Elphin: Katie to the theatre very seldom went,
But to see the nice new Gaiety she meant,
Somehow missed her way
On a foggy day,
Got inside some theatre, but the wrong one.
"Hamlet" was the piece that evening being played;
Katie never knew the error she had made,
Really fancied she
Was at the Gaietee,
And the plot she thought was quite a strong one.
Kate was careless, very, very careless,
And she went and ask'd a friend next day,
"The mournful Dane
I suppose was Teddy Payne?"
It was such a silly thing to say.
Chorus: Kate was careless, very, very careless,
And she went and ask'd a friend next day,
"The mournful Dane
I suppose was Teddy Payne?"
It was such a silly thing to say.
