No. 14 - Song - Mayor, Tammas and Servants
Mayor & Tammas: | From place to place I fare, lads, A strolling ballad-monger, Good songs we have to make you weep or swear; |
Servants: | Or swear. |
Mayor & Tammas: | And by peddling ballads rare, lads, I satisfy my hunger. Listen while I sing a sample air; |
Servants: | An air. |
Mayor: | We've ballads gay, or sentimental. |
Servants: | Sing one! |
Tammas: | I'll sing a specimen or two! Here's to the maiden of bashful fifteen, And here's to the widow of fifty! |
Mayor: | (interrupting) Oh, where, tell me where, Where has my Highland laddie gone? |
Tammas: | (continuing) Let the toast pass! Drink to each lass. I warrant she'll prove an excuse for a glass. |
Both: | It's so pretty, you know! |
Servants: | Quite so! |
Tenors & Mayor: | Then hark, while I warble! And listen pray to my soulful lay! |
Basses & Tammas: | Surely hearts of marble Would melt at such a voice. |
Tenors & Mayor: | All true lovers of music |
All: | Will pay us/you money to keep away. |
Mayor & Tammas: | We've new songs, or old songs, |
Servants: | We really have no choice! |
Mayor & Tammas: | We've ballads gay and doleful, We've tearful songs of mother, Our drinking songs and hymns are something great. |
Servants: | They're great. |
Mayor & Tammas: | And our love-songs are so soulful, You'll never buy another. If to hear us sing one you will wait; |
Servants: | Go on! |
Mayor: | I've stirring ballads patriotic. |
Servants: | Sing one! |
Tammas: | Here is a pretty song for you! Duncan Grey came here to woo! |
Tenors & Mayor: | Ha, ha! the wooing o't! ... |
Tammas: | Rule, Britannia! |
Mayor: | ...woo! Ha, ha! the wooing... |
Tammas: | Rule, Brit... |
Mayor: | Christmas eve when I was fou'... |
Tammas: | ...rules the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be... |
Mayor: | God save our gracious King! |
Tammas: | ..unco sky, Made poor Duncan nearly cry; |
Mayor: | ...noble King! |
Servants: | Bravo! |
Mayor & Tammas: | That really is so sweet! |
Servants: | Quite so! |
Mayor & Tenors: | Then hark while I/they warble, And listen, pray, to my/their soulful lay. |
Tammas & Basses: | Surely hearts of marble Would melt at such a voice. |
Mayor & Tenors: | All true lovers of music ... |
All: | Will pay us/you money to keep away. |
Mayor & Tammas: | We've new songs, or old songs, |
Servants: | We really have no choice! |
