Nellie Mortimer (1881)

Nellie Mortimer made her New York Stage debut in 1870 at the Academy of Music in Deborah in a cast that starred Fanny Janauschek. She would appear in New York and environs often over the next decade, initially with Augustin Daly's companies, and made her Gilbert & Sullivan debut in H.M.S. Pinafore and The Sorcerer at New York's Lyceum Theatre in March 1879. She made her first and only appearance under D'Oyly Carte auspices between February and June 1881 as Eliza Dabsey with R. D'Oyly Carte and E. E. Rice's First Billee Taylor Company in New York and Boston. Her last appearance in a New York cast was in a play called Mixed Pickles at the Fourteenth Street Theatre in August 1885.

She was married to actor George F. de Vere. It seems likely that Nellie de Vere who appeared in Billee Taylor as a charity girl (and also in Carte's New York production of Claude Duval) was their daughter.
