THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

George King Morgan (1881-87)

[Born Dublin 15 Mar 1859, died Kensington Apr 1926]

George King Morgan was one of the "Gentlemen of the Chorus" at the Opera Comique who signed a letter of appreciation to Gilbert, Sullivan, and Carte in January 1882. He probably remained with the D'Oyly Carte in London until 1887, for we know that a Mr. Morgan was in the choruses of both The Mikado and Ruddigore during their initial productions at the Savoy.

He would later land some principal roles, but not in London and with the D'Oyly Carte. Beginning in 1889 he starred in such works as Dorothy, Doris, and The Red Hussar with Frank Leslie's companies. His later roles include an 1895 tour as Erling Sykke in W. S. Gilbert & Osmond Carr's "His Excellency!".
