James McCalmont (1880)

On Friday, December 10, 1880, Captain James Martin McCalmont appeared in Cork, Ireland, as Sir Joseph Porter in Mr. D'Oyly Carte's "A" Company's touring production of H.M.S. Pinafore. Captain McCalmont was at the time aide de camp to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He had played Sir Joseph before as an amateur, but his appearance with the Carte organization was not well received by the critic for The Era who deemed him a "very poor representative of the part." McCalmont had at least one further appearance in the part, on December 21 in Belfast.
