THE D'OYLY CARTE OPERA COMPANY

W. D. Marks (1880)

[Born London 1846, died 1915]

Woolf David Marks emigated to America as a child, where he sang at New York's Caledonian Club in 1876, and later that year toured with an English Opera Company. He was engaged to play the Pirate King with D'Oyly Carte's Third American Pirates of Penzance Company between February and July 1880. That tour was his only D'Oyly Carte experience. He would, however, get the opportunity to send up his own role in Tony Pastor's burlesque The Pie-Rats of Penn-Yann (Tony Pastor's Music Hall, New York, February-March 1881). He was Peter, King of the Prowlers, in a cast that included Lillian Russell as Maria, "formerly called Mabel."
