Lyon Mackie (1916-17)

Lyon Mackie joined the D'Oyly Carte Repertory Opera Company in January 1916, replacing Walter Glynne. As one of two principal tenors, Mackie appeared regularly as Ralph Rackstraw in Pinafore, Earl Tolloller in Iolanthe, Prince Hilarion in Princess Ida, and Colonel Fairfax in Yeomen until June 1917, when he left to join the Army. He also filled in on occasion for the other principal tenor, Dewey Gibson, as Marco in The Gondoliers during the 1916-17 season.
After the war, Mackie turned his attention to grand opera, appearing at the Old Vic in Faust, Carmen, Cavalleria Rusticana, Martha, Rigoletto, Fra Diavolo, and The Lily of Killarney in 1919-20. In 1925 he made one last appearance at the Old Vic as William in Mignon.
