Denise Findlay (1947-48)
[Born Seine-et-Oise, France, 1923]
The daughter of a Scottish soldier who returned to France after World War I to marry his wartime sweetheart, Denise Findlay first appeared publicly at age 16 at a Glasgow church concert. After several years of voice training she auditioned with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company and was hired as a chorister in April 1947. She graduated to principal soubrette roles the following season (1947-48), appearing regularly as Edith in The Pirates of Penzance, Iolanthe in Iolanthe, Pitti-Sing in The Mikado, Phoebe Meryll in The Yeomen of the Guard, and Tessa in The Gondoliers. Iolanthe, Phoebe and Tessa were shared with Joan Gillingham. When Miss Findlay wasn't singing Tessa in The Gondoliers, she took the smaller part of Giulia.
Miss Findlay left the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company at the end of the season in July 1948.
