Margaret Evans (1936-43)
Margaret Evans joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company chorus in August 1936 and remained with the Company until December 1943.She first appeared the small part of Kate in The Pirates of Penzance during the 1939-40 season, sharing the part with Ivy Sanders until Miss Sanders left the Company in September 1940.Miss Evans assumed the parts of Peep-Bo in The Mikado and Vittoria in The Gondoliers in August 1940, and added Leila in Iolanthe in September of that year.
Miss Evans was the exclusive Kate (Pirates), Leila, Peep-Bo, and Vittoria in 1941-42, but beginning in August 1942, when Miss Sanders returned, Margaret Evans shared all but Peep-Bo with her.Miss Evans also understudied principal soubrette Marjorie Eyre, and between August 1942 until December 1943, when she left the Company, filled in on occasion as Iolanthe in Iolanthe, Phoebe Meryll in The Yeomen of the Guard, and Tessa in The Gondoliers.
Margaret Evans later appeared on the London Stage as the Scrubwoman in the comedy I Remember Mama (Aldwych, 1948).
She eventually relocated to Canada where she remained
involved with Gilbert & Sullivan as a member of the Toronto Branch of the
Gilbert & Sullivan Society.
