The Miller and His Man, described as "a drawing-room extravaganza", was written by F. C. Burnand. Arthur Sullivan, the title page proclaims, composed the songs whilst the provision of the incidental music was entrusted to James F. Simpson. It was originally published in The Illustrated News Christmas Number for 1873.
Two songs, "The Marquis de Mincepie" and the finale (the latter as "Care is all fiddle-dee-dee"), were published separately by Cramer the following year with Sullivan clearly credited with their composition. But if we take the legend on the title page at face value Sullivan was also responsible for the serenade and trio in Scene I and the duet in Scene II.
