GLOUCESTER MUSICAL FESTIVAL |
(FROM OUR OWN REPORTER) |
GLOUCESTER, SEPT. 7
Yesterday’s programme, one of unusual variety and interest, opened with Mr. Arthur Sullivan’s overture, In Memoriam – if “overture” that may be termed which is purely elegiac. The merits of this beautiful composition, which, originally written for the Norwich Festival, has on more than one occasion been heard at the Crystal Palace and elsewhere, are widely known and appreciated. It is a genuine poem in music, and its essentially religious character, enhanced by the happy use of the organ in the peroration, being strictly in keeping with the theme to which it is dedicated – the remembrance of a beloved parent – justly entitled to the place it occupied in the selection of this morning. Every pains (sic) was taken by the conductor and his fine orchestra to insure an efficient performance, and the result would have satisfied the author himself.
