1 | O Jesu, Thou art standing | 2 | O Jesu, Thou art knocking;
Outside the fast-closed door, | And lo! that hand is scarr’d,
In lowly patience waiting | And thorns Thy brow encircle,
To pass the threshold o’er: | And tears Thy face have marr’d:
Shame on us, Christian brethren, | O love that passeth knowledge
Whose name and sign we bear, | So patiently to wait!
O shame, thrice shame upon us | O sin that hath no equal
To keep Him standing there! | So fast to bar the gate! |
3 | O Jesu, Thou art pleading
In accents meek and low,
“I died for you, My children,
And will ye treat me so?”
O Lord, with shame and sorrow
We open now the door; | ||
Dear Saviour, enter, enter,
And leave us never more. Amen. |
