    Though thy path be dark as night;       Perish all that fears the light!
  There’s a star to guide the humble: —     Whether losing, whether winning,

    And its end far out of sight;       Trust no leaders in the fight;
  Foot it bravely; strong or weary,     But in every word and action

3 Trust no lovely forms of passion,   4 Simple rule, and safest guiding,
    Fiends may look like angels bright;       Inward peace, and inward might,
  Trust no custom, school, or fashion:     Star upon our path abiding,

  Some will hate thee, some will love thee,     Courage, brother! do not stumble,
    Some will flatter, some will slight;       Though thy path be dark as night;
  Cease from man, and look above thee:     There’s a star to guide the humble: —
