No. 6: Quartet (Rosie, Susan, Terence and Bunn)
Music by Arthur Sullivan.
| Rosie. | |
| Two is company - three is none: What's to be done? From three take one - One from three are two, I own But that leaves one apple all alone! | |
| Rosie, Terence, Bunn. | |
| Multiplication Is vexation -- Division is as bad! The rule of three Doth puzzle me -- Subtraction drives me mad! | |
| Terence. | |
| One remains, and if that be true, What shall we do? From three take two: One from three will leave you one - So two from three should leave us none! | |
| Rosie, Terence, Bunn. | |
| Exhilaration! Jubilation! The problem fairly fought! If one from three Leaves one - that's me/he, Then two leaves nought - or ought! | |
They are surprised to find Bunn still left over. Susan has meanwhile re-entered.
| Susan. | |
| I've discovered a useful fact Certain to act, You don't subtract! Add one more to the three you've bought And then divide -- the remainder's nought! | |
| Rosie and Terence. | Susan and Bunn. |
| Simple equation! Calculation The fruit of its labour bears! Three apples glum At once become Contented, contented happy pairs! At once become Contented happy, happy pairs! |
