“Savoy Triumvirate.” Daily Telegraph, no. 16,281, July 4, 1907, p. 6
(apparently abridged from a letter to the Dublin Evening Herald)
Sir W.S. Gilbert has written the following letter to the Dublin Evening Herald: “Grims Dyke, Harrow Weald, July 2, 1907. “
SIR—In your issue of June 20 there is an article concerning myself which contains many errors. I hope you will allow me to correct them. I am described as holding a master mariner’s certificate. I hold nothing of the kind. ….
“It is stated that I prosecuted an organgrinder for annoyance, and then applied for permission to appear as his counsel. This is absolutely untrue. An anecdote is given in which I am made to reply rudely to an actor who expressed approval of a suggestion of mine. This is also untrue. I am never rude to the members of any company.
“A circumstantial account of the separation between Gilbert and Sullivan is given in great detail. There is not a word of truth in that statement. The ‘separation’ was not between ‘Gilbert and Sullivan,’ but between myself and Mr. D’Oyly Carte. It arose from a question whether a sum of £1,500 for refurnishing the front of the Savoy Theatre was properly included in the preliminary expenses of the production of ‘The Gondoliers.’ I had no quarrel with Sir A. Sullivan, though a coolness existed between us for a time, in consequence of his declining to interfere in the difference between Mr. Carte and myself. This coolness lasted a very short time, and was quickly done away with by mutual expressions. – Yours faithfully,
W.S. GILBERT
