A NEW YORK MANAGER.

To the Editor of The Era

Sir, – As an instance of fair dealing on the part of a New York manager, permit me to submit to your readers a letter which I have just received from Mr Palmer, of the Madison-square Theatre.

During the last sixteen years my plays have been performed many thousands of times in all the cities and towns of the United States, but this is only the second instance in which a voluntary payment has been made to me by an American manager.  About twelve years ago the late Mr M‘Cullough sent me £66 for a fortnight’s performances of The Palace of Truth at St. [sic] Francisco.

"Madison-square Theatre, New York,
"February 19th, 1886.

"Dear Sir, – I am about to produce your comedy Engaged in this theatre for a brief run, and shall send you royalties at the rate of $20 per performance.

"Will this be satisfactory to you? I have procured copies of the play from Samuel French and Son of this city, and have taken it for granted that, as the work is printed, you have no objection to its proper presentation.  I will remit to you direct, in care of the Savoy Theatre.
