WSG to The Era, Oct. 13, 1883 (issue 2351)

The New Opera at the Savoy.

To the Editor of The Era

Sir,

I have no reply to make to Mr. Weatherly.

  Yours faithfully,
    W. S. GILBERT.

[This is in reply to a letter from Frederic E. Weatherly in the Era of Oct. 6, 1883, claiming plagiarism on the grounds that he had submitted to Gilbert six pages of a libretto of a comic opera on university life, offering to collaborate with him; now Mr. Weatherly has heard "that in Iolanthe the leading comic character is the Lord Chancellor, while in my opera the leading comic character was a vice-chancellor.  And now, to cap all, I hear that the new comic opera is solely and entirely a skit on University life.  I pause for Mr. Gilbert’s reply."]
