No. 12 - Song - Hilda and Chorus - "The Miller's Daughter"
Hilda: | A miller's daughter lived beside a mill, She sat and sobbed and even cried until A youth came by resolved to try his wiles. |
Chorus: | Came by resolved to try his wiles. |
Hilda: | He found that maiden hard to understand, Till one fine day he thought he'd won her hand, But wretched soul he'd miss'd his goal by miles. |
Chorus: | Poor soul he'd miss'd his goal by miles. |
Hilda: | She was a miller's daughter, And lived beside a mill; Still and deep ran the water, But she was deeper still. |
Chorus: | She was a miller's daughter, And lived beside a mill; Still and deep ran the water, But she was deeper still. |
Hilda: | Now when he most politely said "good-day," His hat he lifted from his head this way, And then, you know, he bowed quite low to her. |
Chorus: | And then he bowed quite low to her. |
Hilda: | "Perhaps you'll take a little walk," said he, "Some ladies say they love to talk with me," She merely sigh'd, and just replied "Oh, sir!" |
Chorus: | But sigh'd, and just replied "Oh, sir!" |
Hilda: | She was a miller's daughter, And lived beside a mill; Cold was the touch of the water, But she was colder still. |
Chorus: | She was a miller's daughter, And lived beside a mill; Cold was the touch of the water, But she was colder still. |
Hilda: | He thought of such nice things to her to say, He tried "Has this not been a perfect day?" But this fell flat, she'd heard all that. (So sly!) |
Chorus: | Fell flat, she'd heard all that. (So sly!) |
Hilda: | He coyly asked her if a dance she liked, Or if that by the merest chance she biked, She shook her head and blandly said, "Oh, my!" |
Chorus: | She shook her head and said, "Oh, my!" |
Hilda: | She was a miller's daughter, And lived beside a mill; Fast now and then ran the water, But she was faster still. |
Chorus: | She was a miller's daughter, And lived beside a mill; Fast now and then ran the water, But she was faster still. |
Hilda: | At last one day she caused his eye to wake, He said one risqué word quite by mistake. I'm shock'd to say she cried "Hurrah!" "Sublime!" |
Chorus: | To say she cried "Hurrah!" "Sublime!" |
Hilda: | He then proposed to interject one kiss— "Of course," she said, "I've been expecting this. Don't you feel small at wasting all this time!" |
Chorus: | Feel small at wasting all this time! |
Hilda: | She was a miller's daughter, And lived beside a mill; Blue was the tone of the water, But she was deeper still. |
Chorus: | She was a miller's daughter, And lived beside a mill; Blue was the tone of the water, But she was deeper still. |
Hilda: | Now when he'd fairly broken through the ice, He really thought the maiden rather nice; In fact, he took and fondly shook her hand. |
Chorus: | He took and fondly shook her hand. |
Hilda: | He held that hand from half-past-ten till three, "I fear I must go home, dear," then said he. She murmur'd, "Oh! please don't leave go, it's grand!" |
Chorus: | She murmur'd, "Don't leave go, it's grand!" |
Hilda: | She was the miller's daughter, And lived beside the mill; Though there were "flies" on the water, Yet she was "flyer" still. |
Chorus: | She was a miller's daughter, And lived beside a mill; Though there were "flies" on the water, Yet she was "flyer" still. |
