No. 16 - Scena - Josephine - "Impatiently I wait."
Josephine: | Impatiently I wait! No suppliant who comes to plead Before the highest in the land for lordly favours; No, indeed! 'Tis merely justice I demand, If it be not too late! For aching hearts is there no cure? For wounded pride no real redress? When joy departs must we endure The whelming tide of wretchedness? For grievous sorrow such as mine Is there no balm, no anodyne? O golden day dreams that have vanished hence! O shattered hopes that leave me sad and lonely! Shall naught unto my life bring recompense? I ask for justice, and for justice only! Cheated and betrayed! Flattered and cajoled! Never did a maid such a tale unfold. Yet I do not crave pity or compassion, But for him who dared behave In so vile a fashion. Come Retribution, swift and strong, Avenge my woes, and right the wrong! O golden day dreams that have vanished hence! O shattered hopes that leave me sad and lonely! Shall naught unto my life bring recompense? I ask for justice, and for justice only! |
