No. 15 - Act II Opening Chorus
Chorus: | When the birds begin to sing in the gladness of the spring, And the village bells are all, are all a-chime, When the sun is bright and high and the flags begin to fly, While the noisy, noisy village band marks time, With the world in gala dress you can candidly confess That you never, never knew so bright a day. And it's worth your while to roam for an English welcome home In the merry, merry month of May! |
Bridesmaids: | We're the pretty bridesmaids, smart and stately, Sweeping down the chancel two by two; Though we haven't had much practice lately, Spring will bring a crop of brides anew. Loveliest of bouquets, sweetest laces, Bridegroom rather nervous, bride perplext. Ours, of all the guests, the fairest faces. Each of us anticipates her own turn next. |
Four Boys (old men): | |
Tough old patriarchs are we, Hard as you can wish to see, Ninety-one to ninety-three Our respective ages. Maidens shy droop their eye When our manly forms go by. Hale old patriarchs are we, Tough as you can hope to see, Ninety-one to ninety-three We're the local sages. |
|
Girls: | Oh! we are the lasses who milk the cows That carry the crumpled horns, Who tend the bees, and make the cheese, As soon as the daylight dawns. We're up with the lark, and busy till dark, At work till the shadows fall. We bustle about, week in and week out, the lasses of Homewood Hall. With a crack! crack! crack! Our gay little whips we ply, As the wheels spin round on the yielding ground, And the dust and the mile-stones fly. With a crack! crack! crack! A creak and a clinking chain, And we're galloping, galloping, galloping, galloping, Galloping, home again. |
