No. 18 - Song - Chandra - "The Poplar and the Rainbow."
Chandra: | A poplar tree in a forest stood, Her head the highest in the wood. She ne'er looked down, nor scorned to frown On aught that chanced to grow. Above her crest one day there came A rainbow with his heart aflame, Who poured his love from high above On the poplar tree below. Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah! So the Poplar raised her head up to the rainbow, And she almost touched the fingers of the rainbow; And (as poplars always do) She avowed that she'd be true To the variegated colours of the rainbow. |
The rainbow stayed some time, I fear, And made remarks that seemed sincere; The poplar blushed, the forest hushed To hear what she replied; The thing she murmur'd no one heard, But still the forest caught one word And that word was a lot because The poplar turned and sighed. Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah! For the Poplar raised her head up to the rainbow, And she almost touched the fingers of the rainbow; When the rainbow threw a kiss To the poplar tree like this, Then the poplar blushed the colours of the rainbow. |
|
Alas! just like all other men, The rainbow threw one kiss, and then Was no more seen, and where he's been The poplar cannot hear. The poplar bowed her head and wept, And for six long months she never slept, And she cried "Ah me, he has gone to see Someone he loves more dear." Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah! And the Poplar raised her head up to the rainbow, But she never ever found her dazzling rainbow. All you maidens, heed my plan, Never "look up" to a man, Learn a lesson from the poplar and the rainbow. |
