No. 28 - Duet - Maud (or Daisy) and Carbonnet - "Can this be love?"
Carbonnet: | I'm glad that Paris pleases you, |
Maud: | It charms me altogether! |
Carbonnet: | I hope you're charmed with Frenchmen too! |
Maud: | We're having lovely weather. |
Carbonnet: | Oh, yes, delightful weather! |
Maud: | You paint some pretty models here — |
Carbonnet: | My chances much too few are. |
Maud: | Nice-looking girls they all appear — |
Carbonnet: | But not as nice as you are! |
Both: | But not as nice as you/we are! Can this be love, oh, can it be? Peut-etre non, peut-etre oui! I wonder what he/she thinks of me, And how I really strike him/her? Hélas, mon couer est agité! We never met before today, But oh! I am compelled to say I like him/her! yes, I like him/her! |
Carbonnet: | Your best of friends I want to be, |
Maud: | You show no hesitancy. |
Carbonnet: | An English girl's the girl for me. |
Maud: | A Frenchman is my fancy. |
Carbonnet: | You mean that I'm your fancy? |
Maud: | I did not go as far as that. |
Carbonnet: | It really doesn't matter. |
Maud: | But oh! My heart goes pit-a-pat! |
Carbonnet: | And mine goes pitter patter, |
Both: | And mine goes pitter patter! Can this be love, oh, can it be? Peut-etre non, peut-etre oui! I wonder what he/she thinks of me, And how I really strike him/her? Hélas, mon couer est agité! We never met before today, But oh! I am compelled to say I like him/her! I like him/her! |
