No. 3 - Song - Otto and Chorus - "The Well Beloved."

MIDI File

Otto: Who is my well beloved, do you ask,
Your question, comrades, makes me pause and ponder.
To find that well beloved is my task;
In search of her o'er all the world I wander.
Sometimes I think I find her, oh, what joy!
At last I know my well beloved's real.
But soon, alas! her kiss begins to cloy,
And then I know she is not my ideal.
I've called her Lisa, Betta, Gretchen, Joan,
Matilda, Mary Ann, her names are many;
Yet none turned out the vision that I own:
What is her real name; or has she any?
Is she dark, or fair, or fascinating,
A coquette or serious,
Cold and proud, or simply captivating;
This ideal mysterious?
Will she woo, or will she lure me warily;
What is our fatality?
Loves she long or only temporarily
She my ideality.
Chorus: Is she dark, or fair, or fascinating,
A coquette or serious,
Cold and proud, or simply captivating;
All: This ideal mysterious?

Otto: Me thought I found her once, a dairymaid;
I saw her foot, and knew I was mistaken;
I found her once, in silk and gems arrayed;
I heard her past; my faith in her was shaken.
A flashing-eyed brunette of me was fond,
I swore she was my well beloved surely;
But two days later a delicious blonde
Monopolised me, smiling so demurely.
My well beloved's sometimes plump and short,
And sometimes she is very tall and slender;
I love these varied lips, these motley eyes;
To ev'ry beauty my heart is tender.
Is she dark, or fair, or fascinating,
A coquette or serious,
Cold and proud, or simply captivating;
This ideal mysterious?
Will she woo, or will she lure me warily;
What is our fatality?
Loves she long or only temporarily
She my ideality.
Chorus: Is she dark, or fair, or fascinating,
A coquette or serious,
Cold and proud, or simply captivating;
All: This ideal mysterious?
