No. 9a - Mourners' Chorus, and No. 9b - Song - Widow Omee-Omi

MIDI File

Chorus: See where she comes, broken-hearted,
Life is but an empty dream,
Mourning for the dear departed,
Broken by a woe supreme.
Deep is our woe, soon she must go
To her fate by law decreed,
Omee-Omi, say your goodbye,
From all cares of life you're freed.

Omee-Omi: Here in Kachoo a widow's grief
Is something quite beyond belief,
And duty rules that she must show
The outward marks of deepest woe.
You wonder at my grief sincere,
I never saw my husband dear.
If we had met, would my regret
Call forth the same despairing tear?
Each life has a hidden romance,
Or a fancy bitter-sweet,
For the man a woman truly loves
Is the man she'll never meet.
Chorus: Each life has a hidden romance,
Or a fancy bitter-sweet,
All: For the man a woman truly loves
Is the man she'll never meet.

Omee-Omi: In girlhood dreams I often see
The beau ideal meant for me,
And hope would whisper, "Don't despair;
Some day his love he will declare."
But ah! this one whom I adore
Still dwells afar on dreamland shore.
We'll never meet, yet I repeat,
I'll love that man for ever more.
Each life has a hidden romance,
Or a fancy bitter-sweet,
For the man a woman truly loves
Is the man she'll never meet.
Chorus: Each life has a hidden romance,
Or a fancy bitter-sweet,
All: For the man a woman truly loves
Is the man she'll never meet.

Solo: Enough! the fatal hour draws nigh
When you must say your last goodbye!
Chorus: The hour draws nigh
When she must die.
Omee-Omi: The hour draws nigh when I must die!
Chorus: Now daylight is fading and softly the pall
Has come like a curtain descending,
Thro' the dusk we hear the nightingale's call,
With the moan of the night-breezes blending.
Now daylight is fading and softly the pall
Has come like a curtain descending,
Thro' the dusk we may hear the nightingale's call,
With the moan of the night-breezes blending.
