No. 16 - Song - Polly and Female Chorus - "Acting."
Polly: | There is no defensive armour 'Gainst the glamour of the drama, I'll engage. |
Girls: | We'll engage. |
Polly: | And domestic occupations Bear the closest of relations To the stage. |
Girls: | To the stage. |
Polly: | Response to histrionic call Is certain to be found, That echoes thro' the Servants' Hall With no uncertain sound. From dishing up to acting out You very quickly pass; From the Pantry to the Pantomime, From Fricassee to Farce. It's the powder and the paint, And the scenes that are quaint That the interesting story tell And I find it's all the rage Now to go upon the Stage, So I think that I could act as well. |
All: | It's the powder and the paint, And the scenes that are quaint That the interesting story tell And we find it's all the rage Now to go upon the Stage, So we think that we could act as well. |
Polly: | I'll appear in melodrama as the daughter of a farmer Who is poor. |
Girls: | To be sure. |
Polly: | But for that you must excuse him For beneath his rugged bosom H e is sore. |
Girls: | Because he's poor. |
Polly: | He wishes me to wed a lord Of very high degree, And swears he'll disinherit me Because I won't agree. I cry "Oh Father Father," But he answers with a blow, And with the limelight full upon me I am turned out in the snow. |
Polly: | In the third act comes the villain Who is thirsting for a killin' And for blood! |
Girls: | And for blood! |
Polly: | How your hopes sink down to zero When he drops upon the hero With a thud! |
Girls: | With a thud! |
Polly: | He tries his best to murder him It makes you hold your breath, Then I comes in the nick of time And rescues him from death. I says, "Oh say you are not dead!" He says, "Of course I ain't." And then down comes the curtain As I tumbles in a faint. |
