No. 10 - Lullaby - Arabella and Chorus - "Speak Low."

MIDI File

Arabella: When the red glow of sunset has faded and gone;
When the rose-petals tighten and close,
When the stress and the toil for a brief space are done,
How welcome the hour of repose.
It is sweet to the laborer home from the field,
And e'en the philosopher cool,
But to none does the pillow more restfulness yield
Than the hard-working maiden at school.
Speak low, speak low, let's whisper as we go,
And creep along on tip-toe just as quietly as mice.
Tread light, tread light, a kiss and then good-night,
Your head once on the pillows you'll be sleeping in a trice.

  When the dancer is weary of hornpipe and jig;
When the soldier has vanquished his foes,
When the gardener's strong arm is to tired to dig,
How welcome the hour of repose.
It is said that a wise man needs less time for rest
Than either a woman or fool.
But the one who at sleep is a long way the best
Is the hard-working maiden at school.
Speak low, speak low, let's whisper as we go,
And creep along on tip-toe just as quietly as mice.
Tread light, tread light, a kiss and then good-night,
Your head once on the pillows you'll be sleeping in a trice.
Girls: Speak low, speak low, let's whisper as we go,
And creep along on tip-toe just as quietly as mice.
Tread light, tread light, a kiss and then good-night,
Your head once on the pillows you'll be sleeping in a trice.
Arabella: Speak low, speak low, speak low,
Girls: Speak low.
