No. 17 - Finale Act II
Guards: | Citizens of Japan, draw near! And let every man give ear! |
Geishas: | Oh! what is the matter? Now what can it be? There is clatter and chatter to such a degree That something is wrong, there can be little doubt, So we've come to find out what it's all about. |
Men: | We're set upon knowing Just why it is thus, And then, if it is going to end in a fuss, If the Lord of the section is seeking protection, We like his selection of us. |
Guards: | All bow. |
All: | We bow. |
Marquis: | Let all give ear to what I say. I greatly fear that trouble may Be very near, so don't go 'way, But stay like men and face it. |
All: | What is it, we implore! |
Marquis: | When you are told, it's clear to me, That you'll behold what 'pears to be A stroke of bold conspiracy, And you must help me face it. |
All: | Who is the conspirator? |
Marquis: | Our visitors are crim'nal intruders! Go! bring them here and let them not elude us! |
Geishas: | Ah! woe is me, we'd hate to be you, We would quiver, quail and quake, If the Marquis wants to see you, It is not for cream and cake. |
Commodore: | If this is some vile trickery, Beware what you're about! Our country's laws proclaim us far above it. |
Marquis: | This surely is some trickery, Of that there is no doubt; But we and not yourselves are victims of it. |
(spoken) | So, sir; the Ambassador you brought with you is an imposter! |
Hawkins: | No no, I'm not the minister,
nor any of his class, I'm just a four-ply nickel plated common garden ass. |
Marquis: | So, so! imposter! Wretch! Canaille! |
Commodore: | You low, contemptable, base, vile.... |
Hawkins: | Excuse me, but I feel somehow That I really must be going now. |
Marquis (spoken): | Stop! not so fast! you must remain! Who are you? |
Hawkins: | Say, don't get gay, you Japanese! Be careful what you do! I'm up against it, commodore, I guess it's up to you! |
Commodore: | Who, who can this fellow be? And why does he appeal to me? |
Hawkins: | Why, don't you know me, Gov'nor? I'm the lily of the valley. |
All: | He's the lily of the valley! |
Commodore: | What! Hawkins! No, no it cannot be he! |
Hawkins: | Yes, Gov'nor, why, ain't you glad to see me? |
Commodore: | What can this mean? |
Elsie: | Someone must intercede, or he is lost. |
Fantana: | Then I will risk it at any cost. |
(to Commodore) | Oh! you who are so high, so noble hearted, When you hear all, I know you'll set him free. That the one I love and I might not be parted, That worthy fellow did all this for me! |
Chorus: | Oh! you who are so high, so noble hearted, When you hear all, I know you'll free him, sir! That the one she loves and she might not be parted, That worthy fellow did all this for her! Spare him! Spare him! |
Commodore: | Spare him indeed! No, I refuse to intercede! |
Hawkins: | Ah! woe is me! Alas! Alack! Here's where my humor puts on black. |
Fred: | One moment! This will never do! My friends, I must appeal to you. |
Americans: | Release him straight away! |
Japanese: | Lead him away! |
Americans: | Release him straight away! |
Japanese: | Lead him away! Let there be no more delay. |
Americans: | Release him straight away! |
Japanese: | Let him pay! |
Hawkins: | Release me... |
Japanese: | Let him pay for his crime! |
Americans: | He is innocent! |
Japanese: | Away with him without loss of time! |
Jessie: | What will Mrs. Grundy say? All the people cry, Have you asked her if you may? What was her reply? |
(spoken) | Now's your chance, Hawkins, run for your life and thank Mrs. Grundy for it. Unless you see fit, to get a permit direct from her. |
Japanese: | He has escaped! We must capture him And bring him back to await his fate. Sound alarm at once, he must be caught today. |
Fantana & Elsie: | Oh, I hope he will hurry, and not delay. If they get him, they surely will make him pay. If they get him, they surely will make him pay. He has escaped! He has escaped! |
Japanese: | Call out the guard! Let him be led away And held in the execution room for his doom! His doom! For there is a law, Oh, a terrible law, Before which the proudest head must bow. On to the capture! On to the capture! No Mrs. Grundy can save him now. He has escaped! We must capture him and bring him back To await an awful fate! Oh, he has escaped, let us after him. He has escaped! We must capture him. He'll pay the penalty now Before which ev'ry one must bow. |
